The municipality of Amioun, in collaboration with the Union of Municipalities of the Northal Fayhaa and the Regional Center for the Basel Convention, hosted a specialised workshop titled “Proper Waste Management and the Role of Municipalities.” This event aimed to enhance municipal capacities and improve environmental performance at the local level, with the presence of the Director of the Union of Municipalities, Engineer Dima Homssi.

The workshop was opened with a speech by the Director of the Regional Center for the Basel Convention, Dr. Dr. Mustafa Hussein Kamel discussed ways to technically support municipalities, particularly in the proper management of hazardous waste and the mechanisms for handling it according to the adopted environmental standards.

There was an intervention by the President of the Union of Municipalities of Al-Fayha, Engineer Wael Zmrli, in which he praised every effort made to serve and preserve the environment, emphasising the importance of partnership between municipalities and relevant institutions to improve the environmental situation.

The workshop included specialised scientific interventions, where expert Dr. Hanna Khoury presented a comprehensive approach to linking waste management with the concepts of sustainable development, emphasising the pivotal role of municipalities in this field. Dr. Rima Turk also presented Rima Al-Turk presented a lecture on the “Zero Waste Cities” model and its potential local application in line with the municipal reality in Lebanon.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion with the participants, emphasising the importance of enhancing cooperation between municipalities and relevant authorities, which contributes to improving environmental work efficiency and achieving sustainable waste management in the region.
